Rabies is on the Rise... There have been over 220 reported cases of Rabies in PA this year!  And this number is low as the Health Department only tests animals that have had human or pet contact and have no history of a rabies vaccination.  Rabies is a viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system of all mammals, including cats, dogs and humans.  While rabbits, possums, squirrels, chipmunks, rats and mice are rarely infected, there have been confirmed reports of rabid rabbits, possums, groundhogs, squirrels, and even deer in Pennsylvania. This preventable disease has been reported in every state except Hawaii, and annually causes the deaths of more than 50,000 humans and millions of animals worldwide. There is no treatment or cure for Rabies once symptoms appear!

How Would My Cat Get Rabies?

Rabies is most often transmitted through a bite or scratch from an infected animal. In rare instances, it can also be spread by licking, when infected saliva makes contact with open cuts or wounds, and with the mouth, eyes, and nose. Rabies has also been documented to be transmitted from human to human through organ donor transplants. The risk for contracting rabies runs highest if your cat is exposed to wild animals. Outbreaks can occur in populations of wild animals (most often raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes) or in areas where there are significant numbers of unvaccinated, free-roaming dogs and cats. In the United States, rabies is reported in cats more than in any domestic species.

What Are the General Symptoms of Rabies?  Animals will not show signs immediately following exposure to a rabid animal. Symptoms can be varied and can take months to develop. Classic signs of rabies in cats are changes in behavior (including aggression, restlessness and lethargy), increased vocalization, loss of appetite, weakness, disorientation, paralysis, seizures and even sudden death.

How Is Rabies Diagnosed?  There is no accurate test to diagnose rabies in live animals. The direct fluorescent antibody test is the most accurate test for diagnosis, but it can only be performed after the death of the animal. The rabies virus can incubate in a cat's body anywhere from just one week to more than a year before becoming active. When the virus does become active, symptoms appear quickly.

How Can Rabies Be Prevented?  Vaccination is the key-and in most areas of the country, it's the law. All companion felines should be kept regularly vaccinated by a veterinarian with a licensed rabies vaccine. The first rabies vaccine a kitten or cat receives is good for just one year.  Legally, a kitten must be at least 3 months old to receive a rabies vaccine.   Rabies vaccinations are then given every 1-3 years thereafter depending on the type of vaccine given.

Vaccinating your cat doesn't just protect her from rabies--it also protects your cat if she bites someone. Some local ordinances require lengthy quarantines-or euthanasia-of pets who have bitten someone if the owner does not have proof of current vaccination.  If a healthy, currently vaccinated, domestic cat (or dog) bites a human, it may be captured and quarantined for 10 days.  If no signs of rabies develop during the quarantine period, it is safe to assume the animal did not transmit rabies at the time of the bite. If the pet was shedding the rabies virus, it would have developed symptoms and probably have died within the 10-day period. Because the length of the infectious period in wild animals is not known, most wild animals that bite a human must be destroyed and tested.A cat who is up to date with his vaccinations and who has been bitten by a possibly rabid animal should also be given a rabies booster vaccine immediately and kept under observation for 45 days.

What Should I Do If I Think I've Been Bitten by a Rabid Animal?  One of the most effective methods to decrease the chances of infection is to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, and then seek medical attention as soon as possible! You may need to get a series of injections.  Do not attempt to handle or capture a wild animal who is acting strangely (i.e., a nocturnal animal who is out during the day, an animal who acts unusually tame). Report the animal to local animal control officers as soon as possible.  Rabies testing may be done on suspected animals at no charge by the State Department of Health in Lionville.

Natural Remedy Highlight: Slippery Elm to Treat Feline Diarrhea ... The herb slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) might also prove useful in treating a kitty's upset stomach and resolving his or her diarrhea. The herb helps soothe the intestinal tract, and it is also high in fiber. Purchase the herb as a tincture or in capsule form from a health food store. Dilute 20 drops of the tincture in one ounce of spring water. Fill a dropper with the mixture and give this to the cat three times a day. Or add a bit of powder from the capsules to spring water and then give this to a kitty with a dropper or add to a kitty's food.

Fairchild Foundation’s August Mews

What the BOT?  Watch out for this parasite!!  The Cuterebra fly is a large non-biting fly that looks like a bee and lays its eggs on rocks or vegetation located near the openings of rabbit or rodent burrows. Some reports have suggested that eggs can be found in garden mulch that has been obtained near such areas. The rabbit or wild rodent are the normal hosts, and can pick up these eggs on their coats and ingest them during grooming. Cats and dogs may also be exposed in this manner by contacting the eggs as they pass near rabbit or rodent burrows in their environment. Eggs hatch once they are exposed to the warm body temperatures of their cat or dog hosts. The newly hatched larvae invade the host body often through the mouth, nasal passages, or an external wound.  The larva migrates to an area under the skin of the pet, typically on the head, neck, or trunk. A cyst or thick capsule is created under the skin as the larva grows; a circular breathing hole may appear as an open wound with matted hair. There is often fluid drainage from the opening and the animal, especially the cat, will groom the area excessively. The area may appear as a lump or swelling which is also referred to as a warble (the other common name for a Cuterebra cyst). You may actually observe the caterpillar-like larvae sticking it’s head from the open hole at times to breathe. Treatment for cuterebriasis should be performed by a veterinarian. It is important not to squeeze the swelling or cyst as it may damage the larva and release harmful chemicals into your pet’s circulation. If the larva is ruptured during removal, it can cause serious complications including allergic reactions.  Your pet can experience repeated and chronic infections if any part of the larva is left behind. Even with complete and appropriate removal, healing may be slower than expected.

BREED HIGHLIGHT:  The Japanese Bobtail has an unusual 'bobbed' tail more closely resembling the tail of a rabbit, which is due to the expression of a recessive gene. The shortened tail does not pose the serious health problems that it does in other breeds such as the Manx.  The Japanese Bobtail is a small domestic cat native to Japan and Southeast Asia though it is now found throughout the world. The breed has been known in Japan for centuries, and there are many stories, as well as pieces of ancient art, featuring it.  One legend tells of a sleeping cat whose long tail caught fire--it then ran through town, spreading flames everywhere. With the capital in ashes, the Emperor decreed all cats should have their tails cut short as a preventative measure.  The Maneki Neko ("beckoning cat"), a Japanese Bobtail seated with one paw raised, is considered a good-luck charm and is often found in the front of stores or homes.   Japanese Bobtails usually have litters of three to four kittens with newborns that are unusually large compared to other breeds. They are active earlier, and walk earlier.  Japanese bobtails may have almost any color, but calicoes (,"three fur"), are especially favored by the Japanese.  Affectionate and generally sweet-tempered, they enjoy supervising household chores and baby-sitting. They are active, intelligent, talkative cats with a well-defined sense of family life. Their soft voices are capable of nearly a whole scale of tones; some people say they sing. Since they adore human companionship they almost always speak when spoken to, and sometimes carry on "conversations" with their owners. Because of their human-oriented personality they are easy to teach tricks and enjoy learning things like walking on a harness and lead, and playing fetch. ACTION ALERT:  Anyone who sees an animal in heat-related distress is urged to call 610-921-2348 and press No. 1.  They will be put immediately in touch with an Animal Protective Services Officer.  Even on a relatively mild 85-degree day, it takes only 10 minutes for the interior of a car to reach 102 degrees—and within 30 minutes, the inside of the car can be a staggering 120 degrees. Leaving windows open a few inches does not help. Furthermore, when it comes to the body’s ability to cool itself, animal physiology is vastly different from ours. While humans have sweat glands all over our bodies that help regulate our body heat, pets do not and are much less efficient at sweating. In only a short amount of time, a pet with a high body temperature can suffer critical damage to the nervous system, heart, liver and brain. If you’re out and about on a hot day and see an animal alone in a car, you should immediately try to find the car’s owner. If you have no luck, or if the owner refuses to act, contact local law enforcement and/or animal control.  BERKS COUNTY CRIME ALERT 1-877-373-9913HELP STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY!  NEW!  Search the web with Yahoo-powered www.GoodSearch.com  and they’ll donate every time you search!  Shop at www.GoodShop.com and a percentage of each purchase will go to Fairchild!  ID # 920615  Add the Fairchild Foundation toolbar to your computer: http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/fairchild-foundationLaughter is the Best Medicine….What is the difference between a cat and a comma?  ORPHANED KITTENS Quick Tips...

Always use kitten formula such as KMR to feed orphaned kittens. Never feed cow's milk to kittens--it can cause harmful or fatal digestive problems.  Make sure to purchase a kitten nursing bottle.  Eye droppers are not recommended as tiny kittens do not have a gag-reflex and could aspirate the milk into their lungs.  Always feed them in an upright position.  NEVER FEED A COLD KITTEN!  Newborn kittens cannot maintain their own body heat for the first three weeks.  Kittens quickly enter a downward spiral when they get cold becoming too weak to nurse which leads to low blood sugar, coma and death.  Gently warm a kitten until it is alert and mewing for food. An electric heating pad UNDER the crate is a convenient way to maintain the ideal temperature but it should NEVER be placed directly into the crate. Formula should be warmed to body temperature and fed every 3-4 hours.  As they get older every 6-8 hours will be enough. A kitten needs approximately 8 mls of formula per ounce of body weight each day.  Make sure to weigh the kittens daily to ensure they are gaining weight.

Kittens under 3 weeks old are unable to eliminate on their own. The mother normally licks them under their tails to make them void.   You must rub the kitten's anus and genital area in a back-and-forth motion with a warm wet washcloth or cotton ball until the baby urinates and defecates. Stimulate the kittens to go before and after each feeding.

By 4 weeks, kittens are ready to start eating solids. Begin by mixing pureed canned kitten food with kitten formula and offer it, slightly warmed, in a small flat dish.  In another week or two, you can begin adding dry food into the mix and discontinue the formula.   Royal Canin Baby Cat is one of the best foods for this stage.

At 5 weeks you can start litter box training.  Kitten Attract Litter works great to get them using the box http://www.preciouscat.com/kitten-attract-p-10.html

Why do cats do that?  Kneading or "milk threading" as it's often referred to is an endearing leftover from kitten-hood. When a kitten is nursing, s/he will knead the paws against the mother to both to encourage milk flow and to enjoy the comforting feeling of being close to mom.  Most cats will knead on the chests of "their" people and upon soft surfaces around the house, which evokes the fond memory of mom.  Adult cats still find deep comfort in mimicking and possibly remembering this early nurturing.  Kneading is also a way for a cat to deposit its personal scent around their territory because they have scent glands in the pads of their front paws. That makes you part of their territory!

THANK YOU TO WILSON SCHOOL'S ANIMAL RESCUE CLUB FOR THEIR GENEROUS DONATION!  And Thanks to Isaacs for donating to our No More Homeless Cats cause.

Keep your cat safe during holiday and summer fun:

Food:  Seasoning and sauces used on barbecue food can upset your cat's stomach leading to vomiting and diarrhea.  Don't forget that Onions are toxic to cats.  Consuming unattended alcoholic beverages, even in small amounts, can cause serious health issues for your cat.   So keep the table food on the table and let kitty eat her regular kibble!

Safe Hiding Place:   It is best to confine your cat to one room during parties.   With all the commotion and fireworks going off, s/he will not be able to panic and run away.  Put a note on the door so guests do not enter the room and let your cat out.   Place a comfy pet bed, a scratching post, a few toys, treats, food, water with Rescue Remedy www.rescueremedy.com/pets  and a litter box in the room.  Since cats like to hide, consider adding a big paper bag or cardboard box too.  Play some classical music ("Music Cats Love: While You Are Gone") to soothe your kitty or play a Cat Sitter Video to provide entertainment and distraction.  It is always a great idea to have your cat microchipped as this serves as permanent identification should your cat escape.  At minimum, place a break-away collar on your cat with an ID tag just in case.  1 in 3 pets will be lost at some point in their life and sadly, only 1% of cats are returned to their owners.

Feliway or Comfort Zone: Feliway resembles the facial pheromones that your cat uses to mark territory. When kitty is rubbing her cheek against something, she is depositing her pheromones on it, claiming it as hers. These pheromones give your cat a sense of calm that may help her better cope with the stress of the holidays.  www.petcomfortzone.com

Fireworks: Unlit fireworks within the home are also dangerous. Fireworks contain chemicals that can be toxic to cats if consumed as well as matches and lighter fluid.

Sunscreen and Insect repellents:  Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

Citronella candles and oil products: Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.

Glow Jewelry:  Excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation can result from ingestion.

If you suspect that your cat has ingested something poisonous, please do not hesitate to call the

Animal Poison Control Center at 888-4AN-HELP (888-426-4435).

FUN FACTS:   Retractable claws are a physical phenomenon that sets cats apart from the rest of the animal kingdom: only cheetahs cannot retract their claws.  =^..^=  A cat's arching back is part of a complex body language system, usually associated with feeling threatened. The arch is able to get so high because the cat's spine contains nearly 60 vertebrae which fit loosely together whereas humans have only 34 vertebrae.  =^..^=  The Lion is the king of the jungle, but the lion would be defeated by a polar bear if they had a battle.  =^..^=  Cats bury their feces to cover their trails from predators.  =^..^=  Of all the species of cats, the domestic cat is the only species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. All species of wild cats hold their talk horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking. =^..^=  When a domestic cat goes after mice, about 1 pounce in 3 results in a catch. =^..^=

JUNE Mews
It's Adopt-a-Cat Month!!
June is the time of year that shelters across the country try to raise awareness and find good homes for the thousands and thousands of cats and kittens. A single pair of cats and their offspring can produce as many as 420,000 cats in 7 years. SO PLEASE SPAY & NEUTER!! Cats left to fend for themselves without the love and care of responsible Pet Parents is a very serious problem. Animal Shelters are over run each year by stray and abandoned cats and kittens. One of our local shelters, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, took in over 6,700 cats last year and sadly, 85% of those cats were euthanized because there are just not enough good homes. Adopting a cat is a LONG-TERM commitment as most cats live 15-20 years! And there is no such thing as a free pet. Cats need Veterinary Care too! Even though you may plan on keeping your cat 100% indoor, cats still need physical examinations EVERY YEAR as well as vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative not to mention the monthly expenses of premium food, treats, litter and toys! According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the average American spends about $200 in medical expenses per cat each year. The average yearly cost of owning a cat is about $750-1,000. Illness and emergencies happen too, so be prepared!
There are many benefits to sharing your life with a cat. Owning a cat provides companionship, entertainment and affection. Having a cat has been shown to decrease the risks of high blood pressure and heart disease. A cat's purr has a relaxing and calming effect. And lastly, taking care of a cat is an excellent way to teach children responsibility and kindness towards people and animals. If you are ready for the commitment, please open your home.  Currently we have 5 kittens that are up for adoption.  They will be ready to go after Father's Day.
Banfield, The Pet Hospital of Pottstown will be offering a free Rabies vaccination to newly adopted cats and kittens over 3 months of age during the month of June within 10 days of adoption with the purchase of an office visit.

Why do cats like to jump on counters? Height is important to cats. Even a moderately high-up surface such as a counter gives cats some feeling of safety and lets them survey their territory. In many cases, counter-tops provide cats with access to windows, and cats are curious! Make the counter less attractive to your cat AND make alternative places more appealing-if not irresistible-to your cat. Here are a few tips:
o Add a sturdy multi-level cat tree (or two) and other elevated platforms throughout the house.
o Put a pet throw on the back of a couch or put a snack table with pet bed near a window.
o Clear some space on window sills, attach a cat napper window perch and place a bird feeder outside the window for your kitty's viewing pleasure.
o As soon as you see kitty jump on the counter, clap your hands and say "No or Off" in a loud, stern voice. Then pick up your cat and move her to a more suitable spot-praise her and reward her with a treat while she is sitting on her appropriate area. Be consistent with this response.
o Giving the kitty a squirt from a water bottle often works well to discourage "bad" behavior.
o Deterrents that you may consider are the X-Mat (covered with raised bumps that are irritating to the feet), Paws Off (double sided sticky tape) and the Ssscat (motion detector that sprays the cat).
o The "Coins in a Can" technique is an inexpensive way to also get kitty to stop jumping on the counter. Put about 15 coins each in a few empty soda cans. Put tape over the cans so the coins can't fall out. Place the cans so that they're precariously teetering over the edge of the counter. When your cat jumps onto the counter, the cans will fall off and make a loud noise, causing your cat to quickly jump off the counter and most likely not to return!!

POLYDACTYLY: Extra Toes! Having extra toes is known to be a genetic trait, and breeding two polydactyl cats will increase the odds of getting polydactyl kittens. However, breeding polydactyl cats is not advised. It is a genetic defect and may be associated with other conditions as well. These extra nails do not wear evenly and ingrown nails may result. This can be prevented with frequent nail trimmings. Extra toes on a foot are common in cats, but relatively rare in dogs. Cats normally have five toes on each front foot and four toes on each hind foot for a total of 18 toes. If your cat has more than 18 toes, your cat is polydactyl. Usually, the extra toes are found on the front feet, and some people refer to these as 'double-pawed' cats. Some of the famous cats in the world have had six toes. Teddy Roosevelt's extra-toed cat, 'Slippers,' occupied the White House during his presidency. 'Princess Six Toes' was one of the 60 beloved felines kept by Ernest Hemingway and her photo appeared in the New York Times and other national magazines.

Laughter is the Best Medicine:
What did the cat do after he ate some cheese? He waited by the mouse hole with baited breath!
Which big cat should you never play cards with? A cheetah.

Why did the cat join the Red Cross? Because she wanted to be a first-aid kit!

May's MEWS....
Hack-Hack-Hack
It's shedding season again and that means hairballs for cats - those nasty little surprises that always seem to be in the middle of the floor when we are not nearly awake enough to avoid stepping on them. Hairballs are formed when a cat grooms itself and swallows hairs. Specialized papillae, turned backwards towards the throat, provide this roughness and act to stimulate healthy coat development and to trap shed fur, which is swallowed a few pieces at a time and passed through the intestines in small amounts. As fur collects in the stomach, it forms a dense matt, called a trichobezoar (hairball). Depending on age, length of coat, diet, health status and size of the matt, these hairballs are either vomited up or passed in the stool. In rare cases, hairballs accumulate in the intestines or stomach creating a blockage which necessitates surgical removal.
The fact is cats spend nearly one third of their day meticulously grooming their coat. This serves many purposes in their lives; it cleans and deodorizes their fur, removes loose hair and skin, increases blood flow and tones muscles. Some cats even groom when they are unsure how to behave during certain social situations. Have you ever seen a cat appear embarrassed after missing a jump and falling off of a chair? No - they are steadfastly grooming pretending nothing happened. Lastly, cats groom to heIp protect them from the environment as grooming stimulates the oil glands which helps repel the rain.

Here's what you can do to reduce hairballs:
• Brush daily to remove shedding hair before your cat can ingest it. The Furminator works great to remove a lot of fur! www.furminator.com
• Feed canned food to help trap fur in the stomach and encourage it to pass through the intestinal tract.
• Consider professional grooming for longer haired and denser coated cats.
• Offer a natural (petroleum-free) hairball remedy such as Vetbasis Cat Hairball Gel www.vetbasis.com or Hairball Aid by NaturVet www.naturvet.com once or twice a week to lubricate the ingested hair and help it pass out in the stool. Note that products with petroleum or mineral oil will prevent the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and can lead to a deficiency especially Vitamin A.
• Switch to a Hairball Formula Diet-one of the best on the market is Royal Canin Intense Hairball
• Add fiber to the diet...Fiber helps your cat defecate easier by adding moisture and bulk to the stool. Canned pumpkin, squash baby food, oat or rice bran, flax seed and psyllium husks all provide additional fiber that can be given to your cat every other day, mixed in with regular food. Try ½-1 teaspoon of pumpkin or squash or 1/4 teaspoon of bran, flax or psyllium.
• Catnip and grass (wheat, oats, rye and barley) are also good sources of fiber. Grow your own Kitty Grass: To receive your FREE Sample Packet of Natural Oat Cat Grass seeds, just MAIL a #10 SELF-ADDRESSED return envelope with Three FIRST CLASS U.S. Postage Stamps to:

Book Review: "Menopaws: The Silent Meows" by Martha Sacks- Mature, responsible, well-adjusted females know that it's natural to expect some changes as the years go by and calmly accept that "to everything there is a season." STAMPS TO THE RESCUE.... Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet is the Postal Service's 2010 social awareness stamp. Every year, 6 to 8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters, and of that number, nearly half are euthanized. Although the problem seems overwhelming, the key to the solution is adopting a shelter pet when seeking a new companion and ensuring that the animal is spayed or neutered. "These stamps continue a Postal Service tradition of bringing attention to serious social issues of the day ... one letter at a time," said Potter. "This campaign will increase public awareness about sheltered pets and our hope is that it will encourage pet adoption and promote humane and responsible pet care." The Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative stamps feature photographs of ten cats and dogs taken by veteran stamp photographer Sally Andersen-Bruce. All ten animals were adopted from a shelter in New Milford, CT.

The Postal Service is working with DeGeneres and Halo, Purely for Pets, a holistic pet care company she co-owns, to promote the campaign and to bring greater attention to the cause. "This is a subject that I am extremely passionate about. By working together, we can find good homes for millions of adoptable, homeless and abandoned pets," said DeGeneres. "And until they get adopted, I'm happy to say that Halo and I are giving one million meals to shelter pets that are waiting for you." On April 30, DeGeneres will join Potter for the official stamp dedication ceremony at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Hollywood, when the stamps will go on sale at post offices nationwide.

The stamps can be pre-ordered beginning today at www.usps.com/shop, www.stampstotherescue.com , or by calling 1.800.STAMP.24 (1.800.782.6724).

Ah, springtime. It is nice to have a little color after a long winter. Easter and spring decorations (and edibles) spruce up the scenery, but also pose a potential hazard to pets. Who knew that plastic Easter grass could be dangerous?

Easter grass: Cats love anything that moves. This stuff moves easily in the breeze, makes interesting sounds, and, for some cats, it is simply irresistible and must be eaten. Stringy things like Easter grass or tinsel at Christmas, pose a deadly threat if ingested, creating something called a Linear Foreign Body. The first signs seen, aside from the material being visible from the mouth or anus, are vomiting or straining to defecate and a painful abdomen.  A linear foreign body can be life threatening. Do NOT pull out visible grass or string as this can cause more damage if the piece is long and trapped far inside the body as the string could cut and perforate the intestines when pulled.

Chocolate: This is more of a dog hazard as many dogs have a sweet tooth-cats can't taste sweets!  The toxic component in chocolate is called theobromine, a naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean.  The level of toxicity is based on the type and quantity of chocolate consumed as well as the pet's weight.  Baking chocolate contains the highest concentrations of theobromine at 450 mg/oz and only 1 ounce is toxic to a 10lb dog.  Milk chocolate has 60 mg/oz and 1lb of milk chocolate would be poisonous to a 20lb dog.  White chocolate contains the least amount of theobromine (1 mg per ounce) and it would take 125 pounds of white chocolate to sicken a 10lb dog.  Clinical signs are vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, hyperactivity, trembling and seizures.

Lilies: Easter, day, tiger, oriental and stargazer lilies are all highly toxic to cats if ingested. The first signs seen are vomiting and lethargy.  Just a few nibbles of a flower or leaf can be fatal as lilies cause sudden kidney failure. Progression can be so rapid that waiting a few hours may be too late.  Peace or calla lilies irritate the mouth, but do not cause renal failure.  Lily of the valley is not a true lily, but it is toxic to both cats and dogs as it contains a heart drug. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, severe irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure and seizures--this is similar to what is seen with ingestion of the foxglove plant.   Also note that Daffodils cause intense vomiting in cats and dogs, and tulips are irritating to the mouth and digestive tract causing profuse drooling, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Book Review:  "Dickens of a Cat and Other Stories of the Cats We Love" by Callie Grant-Our cats are more than pets. They are our best friends when times are tough, our partners when we are lonely, and our pillows to cry on when we are sad. Cats bring companionship, humor, and a sense of mystery to our lives that no other pet can match. A rumbling purr or a tender meow can change our moods and warm our hearts.  A "Dickens of a Cat" gives a cancer survivor something else to think about while a scrawny kitten helps an anorexic girl begin to eat.  The stories are warm, captivating, and ideal for a good curl-up-and-read or for a gift to any pet lover.

FUN FACTS:  The majority of cats do not have any eyelashes. Cats prefer their food at room temperature. A cat's jaws cannot move sideways. Cats bury their feces to cover their trails from predators. Siamese kittens are born white because of the heat inside the mother's uterus as the color of the points is heat related-and cool areas turn darker later.

Why do cats purr?  All domestic cats are born with the ability to purr. A queen will even purr while giving birth. It is unknown whether this is because of happy anticipation, or whether it is a relaxing "mantra." Purring under stress has more colorfully been described as the cat's mantra: a self-soothing, self-healing, relaxing, vibrating sound.  Kittens instinctively purr when nursing, and the mom cat purrs right back at them. Your adult cat will purr whenever you're near, and especially when you are holding or petting him.  However, cats don't just purr when they are content and happy; they also purr during tense or traumatic moments. When suddenly and violently injured, even at moments near death, a cat will often purr. A newer theory is that purring releases endorphins - natural analgesics that reduce pain while healing proceeds.  The measurable Hertz of a cat's purr lies between 25 and 150, which interestingly sound frequency in this range, can stimulate bone growth and healing.  Cat purrs will range from a deep rumble to a raspy, broken sound, to a high-pitched trill, depending on the physiology and/or the mood of a cat. A cat will often "wind-down" when going to sleep, with a long purring sigh that drops melodically from a high to a low pitch.   In a lifetime, the average house cat spends approximately 10,950 hours purring.

Why do they say a Cat has 9 Lives?   Nine, a trinity of trinities, is a mystical number often invoked in religion and folklore. The cat was once revered in Egypt, and this is probably where its nine lives began. The priesthood in On - known to the Greeks as Heliopolis and now a suburb of Cairo - worshipped Atum-Ra, a sun god who gave life to the gods of air, moisture, earth and sky, who, in turn, produced Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys. These gods are collectively known as the Ennead, or the Nine.  Atum-Ra, who took the form of a cat for visits to the underworld, embodied nine lives in one creator.  Vestiges of this ancient, cat-worshipping religion lingered in Europe until at least the middle ages. The cat was no longer divine but was still regarded as magical and otherworldly. The ailuromorphic gods are long forgotten, but the cat's resilience still inspires fascination, which is why the myth of the cat's nine lives has endured for so long.

Breed Highlight:  The Ocicat is an all-domestic breed of cat which resembles a 'wild' cat but has no wild blood. It is named for its resemblance to the ocelot but it is actually a mixture of Siamese, Abyssinian, and American Shorthairs.  Virgina Daly of Michigan bred the first Ocicat in 1964.   There are twelve colors approved for the breed.  The Ocicat's coat sports rows of spots that run along the spine from shoulder blades to tail. The spots are scattered across the shoulders and hindquarters and extend down the legs, and large thumbprint-shaped spots appear on the sides of the torso.  Like the Abyssinian, the Ocicat is an agouti breed. If you look closely at the spots, you'll see that each hair has bands of alternating color with the darker color at the tip. They have almond shaped eyes and a large, strong body with muscular legs and powerful, oval shaped paws. Adult males range from 10-15 pounds; adult females range from 7-12 pounds. Ocis can live 15-18 years. Ocicats are active, intelligent and talkative.  They're loyal and loving, and display a deep affection for their human companions.   Most can easily be trained to fetch, walk on a leash and come when called. The Ocicat is a gifted and determined hunter.  They can get along well with other animals; however, they are likely to assert their dominance as they're more confident than other breeds.  Ocicats make excellent pets for people who want to spend a lot of time with their cat.  They need a stimulating environment with plenty of toys, scratching posts and things to climb on.

 Meowy Christmas from Fairchild Foundation
Kitty Holiday HazardsPoinsettias  are considered non-toxic but if chewed can cause significant mouth and throat irritations and gastrointestinal issues, leading to vomiting and diarrhea. Bitter taste deterrents, such as Grannick’s Bitter Apple, may be used to discourage plant chewing.Mistletoe  can be very toxic and if swallowed can cause vomiting, severe diarrhea, difficulty breathing, shock and death within hours.Lilies  that may be found in holiday arrangements could be deadly to your cat if ingested. Many types of lilies such as Tiger, Asian, Japanese Show, Easter, Stargazer and the Casa Blanca can cause kidney failure in cats. Amaryllis Bulbs  are toxic to cats and if chewed can cause vomiting, diarrhea and potentially tremors. Ribbons and Tinsel  are very appealing targets for cats and kittens, but if ingested they can obstruct or perforate the intestines, requiring surgical removal. Ribbons, tinsel, mylar, string, yarn or any other thin, linear object will stick to a cat's barbed tongue during play and then be swallowed unintentionally. Ornaments  can be deadly in the mouths and stomachs of cats, especially glass ones which can cut the tissues of the mouth and intestines. Ornaments with small pieces that could be chewed off are also a potential danger. Potpourri  and Essential oils  will cause mouth ulcers, salivating, vomiting, depression, and respiratory problems if ingested.Light Cords  should be covered up or hidden, and chewing should never be allowed as they could electrocute your cat. Kittens are especially known for chewing cords!

Christmas Tree Water  may contain fertilizers which, if ingested, could cause gastrointestinal upset. Likewise, stagnant tree water can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.  (And make sure your tree is well-anchored in case kitty decides to climb the tree!) http://www.fluffytails.ca/christmas2.asp

Holiday Foods  should not be shared with your feline friends. Rich, spicy or fatty foods can cause intestinal upset.   Onions, onion powder and garlic can cause a fatal anemia in cats.  For some cats, fatty foods could even trigger a serious inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreatitis, which may require hospitalization. http://www.vetinfo.com/cpancrea.html

Natural Remedy Highlight:  L-Lysine, an amino acid, slows down the replication of herpes virus. The feline herpes virus can take up residence inside a cat and flare up on occasion especially during times of stress–this is the most common cause for upper respiratory infections in cats and kittens.  Give 500 mg twice a day for up to five days whenever there is an outbreak or 250 mg daily for maintenance.  Lysine is recommended as an aid in the treatment of feline Herpes Virus and its associated respiratory and ocular symptoms. =^..^= Powder formulas available at www.webvitamins.comregister for a free account at www.iGive.com/fairchildcat and 4.8% of your purchase will be donated to Fairchild!

Did You Know?  Catnip is a member of the mint family or aromatic herbs.  Nepetalactone is the name of the essential oil in catnip that gives it its aromatic odor.  The response to catnip is an inherited "autosomal dominant trait."   Approximately 15% of cats do NOT respond to catnip.  If your cat becomes aggressive with catnip use, stop using catnip and consider trying an alternative such as honeysuckle or valerian toys. Nepetalactone has a sedative effect in humans.  Catnip Tea has a calming effect in humans and may help relieve stress, anxiety and nervousness.

FUN FACTS:  The nose pad of a cat is ridged in a pattern that is unique, just like a human fingerprint…A cat's stomach can hold about 12 fluid ounces (350 milliliters)… A cat can sprint at 30 miles per hour and jump 7 times as high as its tail… A cat will spend nearly 30% of its waking hours grooming itself.

ONE VOICE IS A MEOW BUT MANY A VOICE IS A ROAR!
167 Cats came through our clinics in 2009 and we hope to DOUBLE that number for next year !!

Cold Weather Tips…

Shelter:  Make sure to provide an area that your kitties can go to stay warm and dry to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.  The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with straw or hardwood shavings. Straw resists the wet and keeps a shelter warm whereas blankets will hold moisture. Make sure the doorway is covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.  Note: warm vehicles can attract cats that may jump up into the engine compartment to get closer to the heat.  Therefore, always knock on the hood of the vehicle or blow the horn before starting your car or truck.

Extra Food:  When the temperature is below freezing, you may need to increase calories by as much as 20-30%.  An easy way to do this is to feed kitten food as it is more calorie-dense.  Mother Nature adapted cats to thrive on a diet rich in animal proteins and fats, therefore, Grain-Free diets are ideal for our carnivore friends.  Supplementing their diet with essential fatty acids (canola, safflower and fish oils) will give the cats an extra energy source and cause the coat to grow in a bit thicker for the cold months.

Fresh Water:  Change water frequently.  A pinch of sugar stops water from freezing as quickly, and provides an added energy boost. Don't use metal bowls outside during the winter as a cat's tongue may accidentally stick to the bowl.   Adding extra water to canned food is one way to help prevent dehydration.  Providing a water fountain or heated water dish will insure that your cats always have access to water.  If a cat does not have access to clean, unfrozen water, s/he is more likely to drink out of puddles or gutters, which can be polluted with oil, antifreeze (see below), household cleaners, and other toxic chemicals.

Antifreeze:  Antifreeze, which contains ethylene glycol, is extremely poisonous!  Only a few teaspoons can lead to kidney failure and death.  Its sweet taste attracts pets.  Use the new types of antifreeze such as Prestone LowTox and Sierra Antifreeze Coolant that are less toxic.   www.sierraantifreeze.com

Ice Melt:  Sidewalk ice melts like salt, magnesium, or calcium chloride can cause irritation to paws and are toxic when ingested causing stomach upsets, and if enough is ingested, nerve damage.  Use a non-toxic ice melt like Safe Paws…For more information, visit www.safepaw.com

Book Review:  The Complete Guide to Holistic Cat Care: An Illustrated Handbook by Celeste Yarnall & Dr. Jean Hofve -- This book gives cat owners insight into natural alternatives to improve the lives of feline friends as well as their caregivers.   Dr. Jean Hofve explores nutrition as preventative medicine, vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal remedies and homeopathic treatments.

NATURAL REMEDY HIGHLIGHT:  ESTER C can boost the immune system naturally.    A strong immune system will fight back against Upper Respiratory Infections (URIs) as well as aides in healing injuries faster and can prevent your cats from getting sick in the first place.  The recommended dose is 5-10 mg per pound twice daily but may be given every 2 hours during illness.

FUN FACTS:    Ailurophile is what cat lovers are officially called….A cat’s heart beats up to 140 times per minute, or about twice as fast as a human’s…Puss, a cat from England, lived to be 36 in human years: the oldest cat on record….Ancient Egyptians shaved their eyebrows in mourning when their cats died.

DID YOU KNOW?  All cats need taurine in their diet. Taurine is an essential amino acid that aids in regulating heart rhythm, reproduction, digestion and vision in cats. A cat's body can't manufacture it from other amino acids as most mammals can.  Taurine is primarily found in animal-based proteins such as meat and seafood, so a cat can never be a Vegan.   There should be 100 mg of Taurine added for every 2.2 pounds (1 Kg) of food. If a cat doesn't have enough Taurine in the diet it can cause a degeneration of the retina of the eye that leads to blindness as well as a dilation of the left side of the heart leading to heart failure.

Fairchild’s OCTOBER 2009 Newsletter & Updates....

 The Goddess of Fertility:
Cats have always been recognized for their ability to reproduce—in Ancient Egypt they were worshipped as the worldly symbol for the Goddess of Fertility, Bastet. The average female cat will have her first heat when she is about 5 - 8 months old and 5 pounds of body weight. Alley cats tend to reach maturity sooner than purebreds, and longhaired cats later than shorthaired cats.  Generally, during the reproductive season which runs from about February to October, a female (Queen) will display estrous (heat) behavior every 14-21 days unless she becomes pregnant, ovulates without pregnancy (pseudo-pregnant), or becomes significantly ill. The tomcat will reach his sexual readiness a bit later than the female, with onset of breeding behavior starting about 7-9 months of age. The female’s cycles peak in early spring and mid-summer. This timeframe is when the first and second litters begin their development in free roaming cats. The third litter arrives in late fall.  Free roaming queens will readily mate with more than one male in a cycle and mate multiple times, which results in kittens within a litter having more than one father. Cats prefer to mate at night, and the entire process is very quick, averaging only a few minutes long. The Queen will call to the male with a special vocal sound only produced during the active part of her cycle, and the male will caterwaul back to her. After mating, the queen will let out what can only be described as a scream. She will fall down, lick herself furiously and roll around—if Tom tries to approach her right after mating she will strike out at him. She will be receptive again in 1-2 hours. This pattern may continue for a few days, with gradually longer intervals between mating as she goes out of heat.  To prevent unwanted pregnancies, Fairchild has been using Ovaban for Years and IT WORKS!  We have seen a significant decrease in the number of kittens being born to our colonies.  NOW the FDA has approved it for use as an Oral Contraceptive for Cats under the brand name FERALSTAT.  Visit www.feralstat.com to read about it.
